How to contribute

The Platform Labor team welcomes contributions in the form of blog posts, hot takes, and other modes of thinking-in-progress that touch on how digital platforms are transforming labor, social reproduction and urban governance.

Topics we’re interested in Gig economies around the world; short-term rental platforms; app-based domestic work (e.g. care, cleaning); volunteering platforms; platform regulation and governance issues; platforms and the (post)welfare state; gender/class/racial inequalities in the platform economy; new approaches to studying platforms and platformization; new platform-related themes/topics that deserve more attention.

Who can contribute? We welcome contributions from anyone interested in platform labor. This includes gig workers, academics, students, nonprofit workers, activists, organizers, and more.

How can I contribute? Send a short paragraph to info@platformlabor.net describing your idea. Alternatively, feel free to send a finished draft if you already have one. We’ll get back to you with feedback, and hopefully a green light. Please note that we’re looking for short(ish) and accessible pieces. Drafts should not exceed 1,500 words.

What response timeline should I expect? We’re a small team, so it may take up to two weeks for us to respond to your pitch. Once we accept it, we’ll work together to come up with realistic deadlines.

What is the process once a piece is accepted? If you’ve sent us a finished draft, we’ll send you potential feedback to incorporate. Once we feel the piece fits our blog, it will be published on the site and then promoted on social media.

If you’ve sent us a short pitch, we’ll set up a timeline for you to send us the finished draft. If helpful, we can also schedule a short phone/zoom call to discuss the idea. We’ll provide feedback on the first draft and once that feedback is incorporated, we’ll publish the piece on our website.

Where does it get published? The blog post will appear on the homepage of our website and here, under ‘Blog’. Some of our team members will tweet it out, and we’ll also include it in our newsletter.

Is there any compensation? At this time we cannot offer any compensation for contributions to our blog.
